Congratulations Ian Tully winner Broken Hill Outback Open Art Prize

Art Scene
The winner of Broken Hill's 'Outback Open Art Prize' has been announced by the Prize's judge, Musswellbrook Regional Art Centre Manager Brad Franks and the winner is -

Ian Tully, with his sculpture "Personal Mobile Broadband Satellite Receiver" 2013.

Second prize ($2,500) went to Tim Winters with his piece "Pinnacles Desert" 2013 (pictured).

The Encouragement Award ($800) went to Vincent Namatjira with his piece "Albert Namatjira Camping" 2013.

As you can see, I have managed to get in touch with one of the prize winners (so far) to obtain an image of their prize winning entry. I will pursue Ian and Albert (if possible) for images of their artworks. I love the colours in Tim's painting on paper which was inspired by the Pinnacles Desert in Western Australia. Congratulations to you Tim. Well done.

The People's Choice Award results are not yet known.  This is the first time the non financial People's Choice Award has been offered.

An exhibition of the winning entries and all the 44 finalist's pieces will run from -

6 July to 18 August 2013 at the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery -

404-408 Argent Street, Broken Hill

Gallery hours - Monday - Friday 10am - 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am - 4pm

Entry by gold coin donation.

The annual "Outback Open Art Prize" has been offered since 1994.

Ian has won the acquisitive $15,000 prize, and in return, the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery will acquire the winning sculpture for  display in its already impressive and extensive collection. Not only is Ian Tully a sculptor, but he is also the Director of the Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery. Swan Hill is a Victorian border town about 4.5 or so hours drive from Broken Hill.

Tim Winters is from Stewart Town near Orange, a regional centre in central New South Wales. Tim was interviewed earlier today on ABC Radio National's Bush Telegraph program. See the link here to the interview - http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/bushtelegraph/outback-art/4801940. In the interview Tim said of his artwork "It is definitely not a literal landscape, it is more an interpretation of it."

Vincent Namatjira is the grandson of the famous Australian artist Albert Namatjira.

Congratulations to Ian on winning this coveted art prize, as well as to Tim and Vincent. I am told by someone from the finalist's selection panel that the standard of the entries was very high. I look forward to seeing the sculpture when I'm next in Broken Hill.

Cheers, Jane D

Art, Art, Art ... Broken Hill is full of it

I know I go on about Broken Hill and art but this outback Australian City really is into art.

Tonight there are not one but two art events on, and I'm stuck in Melbourne. Mind you I did go to an art prize awards event in Melbourne last night - Clifton Art Prize, to see my friend Robert Lee Davis win the Melbourne division People's Choice Award, and I saw the Archibald Prize 2013 exhibition at Morning Peninsula Regional Gallery last weekend so I'm not going without.

Nonetheless it still would be great to be in Broken Hill right now and be surrounded by all the art and culture.

I've already written about the Broken Hill Outback Open Art Prize and exhibition opening tonight at the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery in several posts, however, it's not the only art event on in the city tonight. There is another art exhibition opening tonight at another venue. Maybe a bit late notice, but for the record ...

Local Broken Hill artist and art teacher Amanda Johnson is having an exhibition of her art student's work at the Girl Guides' Hall, corner of Oxide and Wolfram Streets from 6pm tonight.  The exhibition will continue between 10am - 4pm daily until next Friday 12 July.

Enjoy the exhibitions. As always, feel free to tell us what you thought of the exhibitions.

Cheers, Jane D

Melbourne artist Deborah Williams loves Broken Hill too

Art Scene
Following communication with Melbourne artist Deborah Williams about her current exhibition 'An Animal Observes' at the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery, Deborah mentioned to me that she "loved Broken Hill" as well.

I took the opportunity to ask her what she loved about Broken Hill and after her first short stay in the city for the opening of her exhibition in May, this is what she told me ....

"I love the people, the outback and the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery" (BHRAG).  She saw a truly amazing sunset as well, and noted "The Palace (Hotel) (pictured) has great food and she loved The Silly Goat" (cafe).

The Palace Hotel Broken Hill
I must say I agree with her about the people, the outback and the BHRAG, which I think is so impressive.  I agree that the food is great at The Palace Hotel (227 Argent Street), and I also love The Silly Goat (360 Argent Street) (formerly known as Food Affair) especially their wonderful coffee.

After this one short visit, Deborah said the city "beckons me back". Naturally, I know what she means.

See link here to my recent post of 17 June 2013 about Deborah's current exhibition at the BHRAG404 - 408 Argent Street, Broken Hill, which ends this Sunday 30 June 2013.

Thanks Deborah for sharing your thoughts about Broken Hill.

Cheers, Jane D

Vote for the Sculptures as 8th wonder of the world on virtualtourist

Horse head sculpture
Living Desert Sculpture Symposium
Why not vote for the sculptures at the Living Desert Sculpture Symposium in the vote for the Eighth Wonder of the World competition being run by www.virtualtourist.com between 3 June and 30 September 2013.

See link here to the competition or just go to their website to vote.

If you've seen the sculptures you might agree that they're a worthy entrant, and if you haven't maybe it's time to go and have a look.  What you'll find is a cluster of 12 massive and impressive sandstone sculptures created by sculptors from around the world as well as local artist Badger Bates.  Sunset and sunrise are good times to go, but any time is worth it.  Take a picnic, and don't forget your photographic device of choice.

The Living Desert and Sculpture Park is located about 9 km out of Broken Hill, nestled in the Barrier Ranges on Sundown Hill, just follow Kaolin Street (Nine Mile Road).

I've written about them several times, see links here 15 December 2011, 13 March 2013 and just recently, 8 May 2013 relating to the sculptures 20 year anniversary which was on 23 May 2013.

You can vote more than once, but need a 24 hour interval between votes.  I've voted (for the sculptures of course).

Looking at some of the 'Eighth Wonder' suggestions the competition is very high.

Cheers, Jane D

Pro Hart movie now crowdfunded and Pozible!

Art and Film
Yesterday morning the team putting together the 'Pro Hart - Chasing Dragonflies' Pozible crowdfunding campaign succeeded in reaching their target of $25,000.  In the final half hour of the campaign, the total reached $25,500, so congratulations to all concerned, it's an exciting time.

A 'crowd' of one hundred and four sponsors large and small put their hands in their pockets and raised the necessary amount, so well done to all you.

The money will be used to create the script for a biographical movie about the famous Broken Hill artist Pro Hart who died in 2006, see my earlier posts for more details.  I've written three articles about the Pozible campaign, see links here - 14 June 201317 June 2013 and 19 June 2013, or just scroll down the page of www.ilovebrokenhill.com.

We can now look forward to a fascinating movie about Pro Hart, hopefully some time soon.

I can't wait to see it.  Cheers, Jane D

Gaara Arts Off the Wall exhibition opens tonight

Broken Hill Town Hall Facade
Art Scene
Gaara Arts (Gaara) members are putting on another exhibition which opens this evening at the Broken Hill Town Hall Facade.  The "Off the Wall" exhibition includes 39 artworks, the works are for sale and I've been told that nothing is priced over $900.

The exhibition is being opened by Christine Adams, Chair of West Darling Arts.  Christine was recently re-elected to Broken Hill City Council in a May By-Election.

Local paper the Barrier Daily Truth covered the story yesterday 21 June 2013 page 2.

The exhibition details are as follows -

Broken Hill Town Hall Facade -  256 Argent Street, Broken Hill

Opens 6.00 pm Friday 21 June 2013 - all welcome

Exhibition dates - Saturday 22 June - Tuesday 16 July 2013
Mosaic mirrors "Looking Through the Window"

artist and provided by Maureen Clark of Gaara

Exhibition hours - Daily 10am - 4pm

I'm in Melbourne so unfortunately I can't make it.  As always, if you can get along to the opening tonight, or the exhibition at some stage, readers would love to hear your comments on what you thought of the exhibition.

The photograph at right is one of the artworks in the exhibition and is of two mosaic mirrors by well known Broken Hill mosaic artist Julie Anne Horsburgh who with her husband Rod, run the fabulous Jarrah Mosaics gallery at - 169 Chapple Street, Broken Hill.

I've visited Jarrah Mosaics and it is well worth adding to your Broken Hill itinerary. The gallery is open daily 10am - 4pm.

I mentioned I'm in Melbourne but it's not all bad as I have a special viewing of the National Gallery of Victoria's Monet's Garden exhibition on tonight, so I won't be totally missing out.

Enjoy, cheers, Jane D

Pro Hart Movie needs more money, time running out to give

Pro Hart's painted Rolls Royce
Art and Film
The Pozible movie campaign for 'Pro Hart - Chasing Dragonflies' still needs over $4,000 of sponsorship via a donation and the money is needed within 48 hours.  The fund-raising deadline is 10.28am Friday 21 June 2013.

I've written two articles about the Pozible campaign, see links here - 14 June 2013 and 17 June 2013 or just scroll down the page of www.ilovebrokenhill.com.

More information you can also go to the Pozible website - www.pozible.com or click on the link to the 'Pro Hart - Chasing Dragonflies' campaign here.  Or paste the following link into your browzer -

http://www.pozible.com/project/19918/

In short a smal group of people are attempting to raise $25,000 via crowd-funding organisation Pozible to assist in making a biographical movie about famed Broken Hill artist Kevin Charles 'Pro' Hart (1928-2006).

Apart from being a member of the famous 'Brushmen of the Bush' art group, he was a prolific artist.  A common theme in many of his artworks which were primarily oils or acrylics, was an image of a dragonfly, hence the proposed title of the film.

One of the interesting things about the Pro Hart story is that whilst he was internationally recognised and admired by royalty (he received an OBE in 1976), politicians and movie stars, he was never welcomed and was even mocked within Australian art circles.  It's quite widely known that Pro Hart was considered an outsider and was never embraced by the art establishment.

There is a Pro Hart Gallery in Broken and the website is www.prohart.com.au.

There was another call for help in the local paper 'Barrier Daily Truth' today on page 5. I really hope this campaign reaches it's target by the deadline, it would be a real shame if the project didn't proceed.

Update
(As I added a few links to this post, in the last hour or so to 11.45am today I've noticed a few more donations have been received.  Nearly $4,000 is still needed).

Good luck to the project team, cheers, Jane D
