ilovebrokenhill.com , was first published on 8 December 2011 by Jane Deany. My blog is all about the famous outback Australian National Heritage Listed City named Broken Hill, located in the state of New South Wales. I first visited #BrokenHill in 2002 and have returned many times since then. ilovebrokenhill.com will help you discover what's great about this historic mining city, where in the mid 1880's the line of lode, a rich ore body of silver, lead and zinc was found. You will find stories about anything related to Broken Hill.

White's Mineral Art Gallery & Living Mining Museum

A good 'problem' with Broken Hill is that there are just so many things to do that it's hard to fit everything in when you visit.

I was surprised to hear that many people only schedule a one night stop-over in the city, as they didn't realise how much there was to do and see. One night is definitely too short.

Although I've been to Broken Hill countless times since my first visit in 2002, I'm sorry to say I haven't visited White's Mineral Art and Living Mining Museum, but I've heard many good things about it. It's often been on my list but I've run out of time.

I was pleased to come across a Tweet to a link to an interesting article by a recent Broken Hill visitor, Gayle Beveridge, who spent some time at White's earlier this month.

Address - 1 Allendale Street, Broken Hill

Telephone - 08 8087 2878

9am - 5pm daily

I've added a link taking you to her blog post, which tells of her enjoyable time at the museum http://www.weekendnotes.com/whites-mineral-art-and-living-mining-museum-and-doll-and-bear-cottage/
Here are some other links to more information about this unique attraction.

There is also an extensive 'doll and bear display'. Kevin 'Bushy' White and his wife Betty own and run the museum and gallery. There is a small entry fee.

Enjoy, cheers, Jane Deany

Broken Hill's Heritage City Listing is described on For Real Facebook Page

Much publicity surrounded Broken Hill's Heritage City Listing on 20 January 2015.

I found this great short video below on Broken Hill For Real's Facebook Page. It is certainly worth watching to hear the story of the ten plus year campaign to #BrokenHill's listing.

The video shows key players in the push for the listing, including Professor Simon Molesworth (Chairman, International National Trusts Organisation, heritage commissioner for five years and the main proponent for the Heritage City listing), conservation architect and heritage consultant Elizabeth Vines OAM and Mayor Wincen Cuy (who now wants World Heritage Listing).

Brimming wins Broken Hill's 50th St Patrick's Races 'Outback Cup'

Community Event/Races
The 50th annual St Patrick's Races were run today in Broken Hill. There were eight races altogether. The main race was Race 6, the 1600 metre Clubs NSW & Keno 'Outback Cup'.

Twelve horses competed in the 'Cup' and No. 3, the 5 year old chestnut 'Brimming', trained by Morphetville trainer Gordon Carter and ridden by apprentice jockey Zac Spain, took out the race ahead of 2nd placed Tresette and 3rd placed NZ horse St Ives. Tresette also came 2nd last year, but won the Cup in 2013.

Altogether there were 138 nominations to start in the 8 races. Racing co-ordinator Trevor Odgers was amazed at the figure, having not seen anything like such a number in years.

Details of the full field and results can be found via this link -
http://www.risa.com.au/FreeFields/Results.aspx?Key=2015Mar14,NSW,Broken%20Hill

I wish I could have been there. I went to the 47th St Patrick's Races in 2012. It was the first time the race had been held on the actual St Patrick's Day itself. (See my blog post of 18 March 2012).

It's definitely an experience worth having.

International Women's Day 2015 ... Broken Hill

Wishing the women of Broken Hill, Melbourne and the world over, every opportunity to achieve what they want to in life, on this International Women's Day (IWD) 2015.
IWD (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, IWD is a national holiday. IWD was first officially celebrated in 1911.

Here is the link to the dedicated website - www.internationalwomensday.com . Australia has 208 official events listed to help celebrate the day.

As the day draws to a close, I hope you've been able to celebrate IWD in some special way, or at least remember the occasion and reflect upon how far women have come, and how far they still have to go to achieve equality.

Broken Hill Department of Rural Health (University of Sydney) Dr Nina Berry Tweets

Lead/Rural Health/Research/Collaboration/Community Values
Interesting story from the University of Sydney, who has a campus in Broken Hill -

Broken Hill Department of Rural Health (http://sydney.edu.au/medicine/drh/)

about community values and collaboration in #BrokenHill. I found the article via Twitter in a Tweet from @DrNinaBerry (Dr Nina Berry).

Worth a read - http://sydney.edu.au/news/staff/2576.html?newscategoryid=223&newsstoryid=14636

The article touches on lead in Broken Hill and the recent announcement (13 February 2015) by Kevin Humphries MP, the Minister for Natural Resources, Lands and Water, and Minister for Western NSW, for the NSW Government to commit more than $13 million to address the issue of high blood lead levels in children in the City.

Professor David Lyle Head of University Department for Rural Health (UDRH) and research fellow (UDHR) Frances Boreland who's called Broken Hill home for two decades and, like me has falling in love with the city, welcomed the news

Thanks Dr Berry.

Tip - looking for news and information about Broken Hill? Check my blog! But also use Twitter with the # (hashtag) #BrokenHill. It's a great research tool.
