Brimming wins Broken Hill's 50th St Patrick's Races 'Outback Cup'

Community Event/Races
The 50th annual St Patrick's Races were run today in Broken Hill. There were eight races altogether. The main race was Race 6, the 1600 metre Clubs NSW & Keno 'Outback Cup'.

Twelve horses competed in the 'Cup' and No. 3, the 5 year old chestnut 'Brimming', trained by Morphetville trainer Gordon Carter and ridden by apprentice jockey Zac Spain, took out the race ahead of 2nd placed Tresette and 3rd placed NZ horse St Ives. Tresette also came 2nd last year, but won the Cup in 2013.

Altogether there were 138 nominations to start in the 8 races. Racing co-ordinator Trevor Odgers was amazed at the figure, having not seen anything like such a number in years.

Details of the full field and results can be found via this link -
http://www.risa.com.au/FreeFields/Results.aspx?Key=2015Mar14,NSW,Broken%20Hill

I wish I could have been there. I went to the 47th St Patrick's Races in 2012. It was the first time the race had been held on the actual St Patrick's Day itself. (See my blog post of 18 March 2012).

It's definitely an experience worth having.

Results of Broken Hill's St Patrick's Races 'Outback Cup' 2014 won by Eight Red

Lightening, thunder and rain threatened the 2014 St Patrick's races on Saturday. Guests were treated to a dust storm, a thunder storm, strong winds and lots of rain, and the President of the St Patrick's Race Club, Marg Corradini said this gave visitors 'a great event, a great show', and noted 'how exciting was that' when she summed up the weather events to ABC Broken Hill radio host Julie Clift in her 'Outback Outlook' morning show yesterday.

Luckily things calmed down and the day turned out to be sunny. The start of the 1st race was delayed by an hour.

It certainly sounds like it was indeed very exciting, and I wish I'd been there. I was fortunate enough to attend the event in 2012, so I know just what a fantastic, fun event it is, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

'Eight Red won the Outback Cup'

The 1600 metre main race, race 6, the 'Clubs NSW and Keno Outback Cup' was won by number 6 'Eight Red', which ran, appropriately from barrier 8.

No doubt the winning South Australian trainer Kym Healy from Strathalbyn, and jockey Wayne Kerford were delighted.

Last year's winner Tresette, came 2nd at two lengths behind the winner and Bellchuca was 3rd.

Eight Red is an 8 year old gelding who has had 10 wins from 63 starts according to www.racenet.com.au and has won over $100,000 in prize money so far. I notice he has 'Octagonal' as his dam's sire (i.e. his mother's father), not to mention Zabeel as his great grandfather. Octagonal had 10 Group 1 wins from 28 starts and won nearly $6 million in prize money. He also produced Lonhro, another very successful race horse who won a similar amount of prize money, so Eight Red is in very good company from a top gene pool, so he may well go on to bigger things. Keep an eye on him if you like to have a 'flutter' aka bet.

I know eight is a lucky number and red's my favourite colour. It's easy to say in hindsight, but I think I may have backed him if I was there. Unfortunately, as it wasn't a TAB race, you had to be at the track to place a bet. I believe, from an event point of view, with the weather delay of an hour, that would have meant they'd have to cancel the races if it had been a TAB event. So in a way, it was lucky that TAB wasn't covering the race this year.

I'm already looking forward to next year.

The field is slightly smaller than last year which listed 11 horses including 1 scratching. Tresette won the race last year and Cruziero came 9th in the race. They both are racing again in today's race. Number 4 Defonet, won the Silver City Cup in October 2013, but this will be a harder race with a better field.

The St Patrick's Day Races at Broken Hill 17 March 2012

Races
March 17, 2012 dawned and it was off to the St Patrick’s day races in Broken Hill with my old friend Melissa.  The biggest event of the year in the city brought out a lot of green, but surprisingly, there weren’t many green dresses to be seen at the track.  No matter, Melissa and I proudly wore our green dresses and enjoyed a wonderful day.

I bet on races 3 to 7 (there were 8 races in all) and had several wins including three firsts, the 1,400 metre race 4 with #1 ‘Dealers’, trained by local trainer Michael Wayman, and ridden by Wayne Kerford, the 1,600 metre race 5 with # 1 ‘My Ex Mate’ trained by Peter F Blanch of Morphettville (SA), and ridden by Shayne Cahill and race 7, the outback stayers 2,200 metres race, won by #1 (again) ‘Young Tearaway’ trained by Nicole Bruggemann of Strathalbyn (SA) and ridden by Elly Brooks.  Number 8 Lotto Blues, trained by Kym Healy of Strathalbyn, won the 1,600 metre race 6 Outback Cup, the jockey was Tara O'Donnell.  I unfortunately didn't pick that one.

Melissa and myself at the
St Patrick's Race Club
I thoroughly recommend putting this on your list of things to do, especially if you like the races, but even if you don’t.  There was a real carnival atmosphere, so many people made a wonderful effort with what they wore.  The weather was sunny, mild and breezy, just as well as the event was cancelled last year due to rain.

As mentioned in an earlier post it’s the first time the event has actually been run on St Patrick’s Day - March 17.  Apparently the scheduling has always had something to do with Easter.  We had a quick refreshing coffee at the Broken Earth Café restaurant which not surprisingly was fully booked out for dinner.  It’s a great spot to take in the view across the city and hills in the distance.  I showed Melissa the moving Miners’ Memorial, which I’ll talk about another time.  It was then off to dinner at Café Alfresco where we watched the passing parade of race goers and enjoyed a lovely dinner.  We popped in to the atmospheric Broken Hill Musician's Club (Muso Club) for a look around, some refreshments and a dance, then called it a night.  What a great fun day it was.

Cheers Jane D
