Travis Nadge (R). Linda & Travis Nadge -
Bronze Award for Specialised Tourism Services.
Community Event
It was great to be in Broken Hill recently to attend the Inland Tourism Awards for 2015. I knew a few of the finalists, and was pleased to witness friends receiving assorted awards from Bronze through to Gold, and for one Broken Hill 'superstar' operator - Tri State Safaris, further, repeat inductions into the Hall of Fame. Tri State was inducted for the Tour and/or Transport Operator category and (with Mutawintji Ecotours) -  Indigenous Tourism.

Here is a link to the Inland Tourism Awards website which lists all the 2015 winners

www.inlandtourismawards.com.au/inta-news.aspx

The event was held at the Broken Hill Civic Centre and there were approximately 240 guests. Eighty percent of the guests were visitors connected with the finalists and the finalists themselves.

Finalists came from the following four regional tourist areas of Central, Inland, Murray and Riverina NSW.

Winners of the Inland Tourism Awards gain finalist status upon entering the NSW State Awards,  and if successful, go into the National Tourism Awards.

I was delighted to sit with Gold Award Winners Eldee Station, who won the Unique Accommodation category, and my friends Linda and Travis Nadge who won Bronze in the Specialised Tourism Services category for their new Outback Astronomy business.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service Bruce Langford Visitor Centre (Broken Hill) won the Silver Award for the Tourism Attractions category.

Multi award winning Tri State Safaris won the Gold Award for both the Ecotourism category and Adventure Tourism category.

There were 26 categories in all.

It was a fantastic night. Guest were entertained by the Desert Queens and there was a Priscilla Queen of the Desert theme.

Brimming wins Broken Hill's 50th St Patrick's Races 'Outback Cup'

Community Event/Races
The 50th annual St Patrick's Races were run today in Broken Hill. There were eight races altogether. The main race was Race 6, the 1600 metre Clubs NSW & Keno 'Outback Cup'.

Twelve horses competed in the 'Cup' and No. 3, the 5 year old chestnut 'Brimming', trained by Morphetville trainer Gordon Carter and ridden by apprentice jockey Zac Spain, took out the race ahead of 2nd placed Tresette and 3rd placed NZ horse St Ives. Tresette also came 2nd last year, but won the Cup in 2013.

Altogether there were 138 nominations to start in the 8 races. Racing co-ordinator Trevor Odgers was amazed at the figure, having not seen anything like such a number in years.

Details of the full field and results can be found via this link -
http://www.risa.com.au/FreeFields/Results.aspx?Key=2015Mar14,NSW,Broken%20Hill

I wish I could have been there. I went to the 47th St Patrick's Races in 2012. It was the first time the race had been held on the actual St Patrick's Day itself. (See my blog post of 18 March 2012).

It's definitely an experience worth having.

Saturn disappears behind the moon on 4 August 2014 - see it in Broken Hill

Community Event
Astronomers are looking forward to an exciting astronomical event tomorrow  4 August 2014, when Saturn disappears behind the moon, as they become perfectly aligned for about an hour.

The event is known as a 'lunar occultation of Saturn'. It is the third time it has happened this year. In this instance, it will be a first quarter moon. Central and eastern Australia will see the moon to the west.

Outback Astronomy is putting on an event. It could be a great opportunity to check out Broken Hill's famous night sky. The event (and Outback Astronomy) takes advantage of Broken Hill's inland remoteness, which is not effected by big city lights.

Here is a link to Outback Astronomy's website where you can find more details about their 4 August 2014 event -

http://www.outbackastronomy.com.au/show-times/tonights-sky-moon-bonus-4-august

Below is a tweet I saw about the 4th August event. The tweet takes you to a link to a great article I read about this lunar event, and which I have sourced some of my information for this blog post.

Thanks to Tanya Hill and 'The Conversation' website -

http://theconversation.com/third-time-lucky-saturns-disappearing-act-29928

Times - Adelaide 8.33pm - 9.28pm; Melbourne 9.24pm - 9.52pm; Sydney 9.22pm - 10.22pm. As Broken Hill is closer to Adelaide than Melbourne, I'm guessing the event will commence around 8.50 approximately and might take 45 minutes. No doubt Outback Astronomy would have more details.

I published a post about Outback Astronomy on the 28 of May, 'Outback Astronomy - starry skies shine in Broken Hill'.

You can find a link to the article below -

http://www.ilovebrokenhill.com/2014/05/outback-astronomy-starry-skies-shine-in.html

The post was written by Linda Nadge of Outback Astronomy, about her exciting new astro tourism business. It was the first guest post I have published on www.ilovebrokenhill.com .

I wish you beautiful clear skies.

Vintage Caravan Nationals 2014 event kicks off today

Community Event - Vintage Caravan Nationals
Vintage caravans should be rolling into Broken Hill to mark the 2014 Vintage Caravan Nationals which kicked off today.

I flagged the event in a post on 18 April 2014, see link here.

Since then I've been trying to track down some more details via online sources, and after quite a bit of 'digging' I've finally found a link that I think will help anyone who's interested to find out more about this event.

http://vintagecaravans.proboards.com/thread/13121/2014-nationals-itinerary

I first heard about the event via a radio interview on ABC Broken Hill's Outback Outlook a month or two ago.
I really love retro/vintage caravans, and their popularity is growing worldwide.

On one of my Pinterest accounts I have a board dedicated to all things retro. It basically focusses on vintage/retro caravans. You can check out this board here
