I first visited #BrokenHill in 2002 and have returned many times since then. ilovebrokenhill.com will help you discover what's great about this historic mining city, where in the mid 1880's the line of lode, a rich ore body of silver, lead and zinc was found. You will find stories about anything related to Broken Hill.

I love Broken Hill, so happy Valentine's Day 2018 #BrokenHill

Thinking of you today #BrokenHill on this day about love. You're hot! Well not too bad today 15 - 33 degrees celsius. Sounds very pleasant.

Changing the subject, to a heavier note (sorry), but just wanted to share this idea pronto.

I came across this great suggestion by Scott Hammond of Broken Hill Lifeline on Twitter via ABC (when searching what was going on in Broken Hill at the moment #BrokenHill) -

That says it all.

Broken Hill has one of Australia's oldest mosques writes ABC & holds links to cameleers

Broken Hill has one of Australia's oldest mosques, and the oldest mosque in New South Wales reports ABC #BrokenHill 's Alexandra Back and Jacqueline Breen.

In a tweet on 6 February 2015 my attention was drawn to their report from the previous day, that the mosque is one of the last links to the cameleers.
It's an interesting story which came to light as Broken Hill remembered the 100th anniversary of the Picnic Train attack in 1915.

The story is fascinating insight into yet another intriguing part of Broken Hill's history.

ABC Broken Hill's Outback Outlook is a radio show on ABC Broken Hill, 999 on the AM band, and is hosted by Julie Clift. In fact Monday 21st January 2014 was Julie's first day in the chair as the long-running show's new host. The show helps you -

"find out the full story with local news and current affairs. It looks at the stories making news from the region, and also includes entertainment and music".

You can catch the show weekdays 8.30 am - 11 am. If you miss it, they have Outback Outlook Reloaded available via the internet which where you can download an MP3 audio file and hear recent episodes of the first half hour of the show.

The Barrier Daily Truth's (BDT) Erica Visser recently wrote an article about Julie's love of Broken Hill and how she has ended up in the City in this important ABC radio hosting role. Here's a link to the article which was published in the BDT on 20 January 2014 which was the day Julie took over the reigns from long time breakfast show host Andrew Schmidt who had been filling in since the departure of the show's previous host Chris Jeremy in late 2013.

I hope you enjoy your new role Julie.

Local bands 'Exhumed' by ABC Broken Hill at The Palace Hotel tonight

The Palace Hotel - 227 Argent Street, Broken Hill
Entertainment
Tonight's music 'festival' is just getting underway at The Palace Hotel in Broken Hill.

The best part about the event is it's FREE!

Several Broken Hill bands are performing including the Silver City Comets, Blue Ridge, Static Rock and Soulforge.  All were entries in ABC Local Radio's 'Exhumed' competition.

ABC Local Radio stations across Australia were involved in the 'Exhumed' competition, a band competition with a difference. It's not for wannabe's or has-beens, it for the never-weres. Bands who play music just for the sheer love of it.

The winner for the ABC Broken Hill region was local Broken Hill heavy metal band 'Soulforge' so congratulations to them. They now go on to the next phase of the competition where six bands are chosen by the public from across Australia for the people's choice award.

For more information about the winning bands from across Australia, and for how to vote, please see the following link to ABC Local Radio's 'Exhumed' link -

ABC Broken Hill news journalist and former rock n' roll writer Jack Marx is hosting this showcase event at The Palace Hotel. Jack will explore the 'back story' to how the local bands came about. It sounds like a fantastic night for music lovers, especially if you like great live bands. I've seen Blue Ridge and the Silver City Comets play before and they're great. I wish I could be there as it sounds like a really fun night.

Please follow the link here if you'd like to hear Jack Marx interview the Silver City Comets.

The Palace Hotel - 227 Argent Street, Broken Hill.

Time - From 8.30pm.

FREE EVENT!!

Enjoy, cheers, Jane D

See link here to read the ABC Broken Hill article by Cherie McDonald about Rick Ball, the winner of the 2012 Outback Open Art Prize, awarded last Friday 3rd August 2012.
(The link above no longer appears to be working correctly, so try this link here to see the basic text of the above article, or search for 'Rick Ball' after going to the ABC Broken Hill website via the above link which has been redirected to ABC SA Country Hour).
See my post of 7th August 2012 for further details about this recent important local event.

Rick has now provided me with a high resolution image (see below) of his winning artwork -

“The Land - Broken Hill and Darling River”.

It really is quite a striking artwork.  Very impressive and a worthy winner.  Once again, well done Rick Ball.

2012 Annual Outback Open Art Prize Winner Rick Ball of Broken Hill

Art Scene
Broken Hill artist Rick Ball has won the coveted 2012 Outback Open Art Prize after coming runner-up in 2009.  The thrilled, well known local artist is in high demand as people seek to hear his story about his impressive oil and pigment on linen winning diptych (2 panel) piece “The Land - Broken Hill and Darling River”.  The story was front page news on today’s Barrier Daily Truth, and I believe ABC Broken Hill is ‘working up’ a radio piece as well.

The annual “Outback Open Art Prize” has been offered since 1994.  Rick has won the acquisitive $15,000 prize, and in return, the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery has acquired the winning work for display in its already impressive collection.

Deb Wall from the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery judged the competition which saw Northern Territory (Utopia region) artist Margaret Loy Pula win the non-acquisitive Second Prize of $2,500 with her acrylic on linen painting “Anatye” (Bush Potato) and Merimbula NSW artist Kathryn Hede win the $800 Encouragement Award with her oil on canvas “Rainy Landscape”.

As noted previously the exhibition runs from 4th August until 23rd September 2012 at the
404-408 Argent Street, Broken Hill NSW 2880, Australia

Opening hours are 10 am – 5 pm daily.  Entry is by gold coin donation.

Darren Parker from the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery kindly emailed me the catalogue of the 38 shortlisted works – some really impressive pieces (thanks Darren, I appreciate your help).

Congratulations to the prize winners, especially Rick.

Cheers, Jane D
