I first visited #BrokenHill in 2002 and have returned many times since then. ilovebrokenhill.com will help you discover what's great about this historic mining city, where in the mid 1880's the line of lode, a rich ore body of silver, lead and zinc was found. You will find stories about anything related to Broken Hill.

Last night Lifeline opened it's annual Lifeline Broken Hill fund raising art exhibition. The exhibition will run from 27 June to 13 July 2014.

The exhibition, in it's 25th year this year, is once again being held at the Albert Kersten Mining and Minerals Museum also known as the GeoCentre.

There are 110 pieces in this year's exhibition and prices range from $75 to $1,200 (only 1 piece is over $1,000). Forty artists have entered works in the exhibition.

Address:     2 Bromide Street, Corner Silver City Highway (Crystal Street).

Hours: 1pm - 4.45 pm Saturday and Sunday, 10 am - 4.45 pm Monday to Friday.

Entry to the exhibition is by donation.

Artists are allowed to enter up to four paintings, which must be original works, suitably mounted for hanging and available for sale. Generally 25% of the profits from items sold will go to Lifeline, and the remaining amount will go to the artist.

It is a very worthwhile cause so do try and go along and support the wonderful work of Lifeline.

This year, as in other years, there will be some great art. I went to the exhibition several years ago and was lucky enough to attend the opening night which was a lot of fun.

Queries to Lifeline Broken Hill's office - telephone (08) 8087 7525,
194 Argent Street.

You can also donate to Lifeline directly from their website www.lifeline.org.au.

Please note you can call Lifeline for crisis support 24/7 on 13 11 14.

Karrie Lannstrom art exhibition opens Sunday Broken Hill Art Exchange

'Summer City Meltdown' by Karrie Lannstrom

Well know local Broken Hill artist Karrie Lannstrom has been busy preparing for her second solo exhibition which will open at the Broken Hill Art Exchange this coming Sunday 1 December 2013. Cathy Farry, the manager of the BrokenHill Regional Art Gallery will open the exhibition at 10am.

I first met Karrie in 2012 at a Broken Hill Carer's art exhibition where she was one of the exhibitors, see link here to read that story. Karrie is a real dynamo, very effervescent, quite a character in fact and a very talented and passionate artist. Last month she was honoured to receive the 2013 NSW Carer's Award for her contribution to caring for her local community.

In Karrie's own words, this "exhibition contains 17 works on paper, 13 of which are new and unframed except for mat board and foam back with plastic all done by framers. All works including previously framed ones are $500 and under”. Karrie will also have printed cards for sale.

The works are mainly pastels, and all are produced on archival quality paper and materials. This is Karrie's second solo exhibition, her first was in 2010. Earlier in her career, Karrie gained a Certificate III and IV in Fine Arts from the local Broken Hill TAFE.

Some of the things Karrie says she loves about the Broken Hill region are the arid harsh lands, the corrugated iron houses often held together with bell wire and cobwebs, the extreme weather that can change the place drastically and the ruins of post industrial mining, the wild beautiful flowers and the wilder characters who survive and thrive on the edge of civilisation here in Broken Hill. Karrie is a member of a couple of the local art groups namely the Broken Hill Art Exchange and the all women's art group Gaara Arts Inc. Karrie also teaches art voluntarily at the local Broken Hill hospital.

The exhibition runs from Sunday 1 December to Friday 20 December 2013.

I wish Karrie every success with her exhibition. I can't wait to see it and am planning a trip sometime soon so I won't miss out. I'm sure it's worth a look and you never know, you might come home with a new artwork. Some pieces have already sold pre-exhibition which is great news for Karrie and some sold on opening day.

Congratulations Karrie, cheers, Jane D

A conversation with Broken Hill artist Karrie Lannstrom

Artist Profile (Art Scene)
I was delighted to chat to local broken Hill artist Karrie Lannstrom earlier this week on my recent visit to Broken Hill.

Summer of 09' by
Karrie Lannstrom
Karrie is a member of Gaara Arts Inc (Gaara). She is a prolific artist who still practices as a "hobbyist" and has never been a professional artist, although from the work I've seen, she certainly could be a professional artist.

Karrie is also a committee member of the Broken Hill Art Advisory Committee. Her work has been exhibited in the annual Lifeline exhibition in Broken Hill for a number of years.

Karrie has held a solo show of 22 pieces at the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery in October 2010. The title of that exhibition was "Dust to Rust - Impressions of the Hill". There is a piece of her work (from that exhibition) available for purchase at the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery right now which I admired before I realised it was one of her works. It is a lovely piece and is titled 'Sturt Peas Dancing Late @ Night in the Hill.'

I first met Karrie in October 2012 at the "Hidden Carers, Hidden Talents" exhibition which I wrote about at the time, see link here to that article. The exhibition was timed to coincide with Carers Week.

If I had a gallery, which I might one day, I would love to represent Karrie's beautiful, rich, textured works.

Cheers, Jane D

Broken Hill marks Carers Week 14-20 October 2012 with art exhibition

Yes more art.  To mark Carers Week, artwork produced by Broken Hill's many carers went on display today at D'Art De Main Gallery at 233 Rowe Street Broken Hill.

Carers Week runs from 14 - 20 October 2012 and this year the theme is 'Be Care Aware'.

The "Hidden Carers, Hidden Talents" exhibition officially opened earlier today.  An address was made by special guest Cathy Farry, the manager of the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery.  Live music was played and there was finger food as well.

According to Tanya Clifton of Far West Local Health District, the carers came up with the idea to have the exhibition as they wanted to show people they were proud to be carers.  They also wanted to raise awareness of the role carers play.  A role that is sometimes hidden, and one that carers often don't even realise they are doing.  There are about 2.6 million carers in Australia.

The exhibition hours are 10.30 am to 4.00 pm daily.  There are several events being held at the D'Art De Main Gallery during the week.  For more details you can contact Tanya Clifton on 0428 965 310 or Sophie Angell on 08 8087 3477 from Far West Local Health DistrictSee this organisation's related media release here.

There are 49 artworks.  Pictured here is one of the entries by Karrie Lannstrom.  It is a vibrant oil on canvas.

Also on the same theme see here for more information on carers with the Care Aware - National Carer Awareness Initiative.

Cheers, Jane D
