Second prize ($2,500) went to Tim Winters with his piece "Pinnacles Desert" 2013 (pictured).

The Encouragement Award ($800) went to Vincent Namatjira with his piece "Albert Namatjira Camping" 2013.

As you can see, I have managed to get in touch with one of the prize winners (so far) to obtain an image of their prize winning entry. I will pursue Ian and Albert (if possible) for images of their artworks. I love the colours in Tim's painting on paper which was inspired by the Pinnacles Desert in Western Australia. Congratulations to you Tim. Well done.

The People's Choice Award results are not yet known.  This is the first time the non financial People's Choice Award has been offered.

An exhibition of the winning entries and all the 44 finalist's pieces will run from -

6 July to 18 August 2013 at the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery -

404-408 Argent Street, Broken Hill

Gallery hours - Monday - Friday 10am - 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am - 4pm

Entry by gold coin donation.

The annual "Outback Open Art Prize" has been offered since 1994.

Ian has won the acquisitive $15,000 prize, and in return, the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery will acquire the winning sculpture for  display in its already impressive and extensive collection. Not only is Ian Tully a sculptor, but he is also the Director of the Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery. Swan Hill is a Victorian border town about 4.5 or so hours drive from Broken Hill.

Tim Winters is from Stewart Town near Orange, a regional centre in central New South Wales. Tim was interviewed earlier today on ABC Radio National's Bush Telegraph program. See the link here to the interview - http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/bushtelegraph/outback-art/4801940. In the interview Tim said of his artwork "It is definitely not a literal landscape, it is more an interpretation of it."

Vincent Namatjira is the grandson of the famous Australian artist Albert Namatjira.

Congratulations to Ian on winning this coveted art prize, as well as to Tim and Vincent. I am told by someone from the finalist's selection panel that the standard of the entries was very high. I look forward to seeing the sculpture when I'm next in Broken Hill.

Cheers, Jane D

Art, Art, Art ... Broken Hill is full of it

I know I go on about Broken Hill and art but this outback Australian City really is into art.

Tonight there are not one but two art events on, and I'm stuck in Melbourne. Mind you I did go to an art prize awards event in Melbourne last night - Clifton Art Prize, to see my friend Robert Lee Davis win the Melbourne division People's Choice Award, and I saw the Archibald Prize 2013 exhibition at Morning Peninsula Regional Gallery last weekend so I'm not going without.

Nonetheless it still would be great to be in Broken Hill right now and be surrounded by all the art and culture.

I've already written about the Broken Hill Outback Open Art Prize and exhibition opening tonight at the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery in several posts, however, it's not the only art event on in the city tonight. There is another art exhibition opening tonight at another venue. Maybe a bit late notice, but for the record ...

Local Broken Hill artist and art teacher Amanda Johnson is having an exhibition of her art student's work at the Girl Guides' Hall, corner of Oxide and Wolfram Streets from 6pm tonight.  The exhibition will continue between 10am - 4pm daily until next Friday 12 July.

Enjoy the exhibitions. As always, feel free to tell us what you thought of the exhibitions.

Cheers, Jane D

2012 Annual Outback Open Art Prize Winner Rick Ball of Broken Hill

Art Scene
Broken Hill artist Rick Ball has won the coveted 2012 Outback Open Art Prize after coming runner-up in 2009.  The thrilled, well known local artist is in high demand as people seek to hear his story about his impressive oil and pigment on linen winning diptych (2 panel) piece “The Land - Broken Hill and Darling River”.  The story was front page news on today’s Barrier Daily Truth, and I believe ABC Broken Hill is ‘working up’ a radio piece as well.

The annual “Outback Open Art Prize” has been offered since 1994.  Rick has won the acquisitive $15,000 prize, and in return, the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery has acquired the winning work for display in its already impressive collection.

Deb Wall from the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery judged the competition which saw Northern Territory (Utopia region) artist Margaret Loy Pula win the non-acquisitive Second Prize of $2,500 with her acrylic on linen painting “Anatye” (Bush Potato) and Merimbula NSW artist Kathryn Hede win the $800 Encouragement Award with her oil on canvas “Rainy Landscape”.

As noted previously the exhibition runs from 4th August until 23rd September 2012 at the
404-408 Argent Street, Broken Hill NSW 2880, Australia

Darren Parker from the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery kindly emailed me the catalogue of the 38 shortlisted works – some really impressive pieces (thanks Darren, I appreciate your help).

Congratulations to the prize winners, especially Rick.

The judge is Deb Wall from the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery.  She will also officially open the exhibition.

The exhibition runs from -
4th August - 23rd September 2012.

Opening hours are 10 am – 5 pm daily.  Entry is by gold coin donation.

The 2011 prize-winner was Janine Mackintosh with her piece – pictured – Droughts and Flooding Rains, 2011.

The second prize is non-acquisitive $2,500, and there is also an $800 encouragement prize awarded.  Total prize pool $18,300.  Judging occurs on the 3rd August.  The judge will look for works that reflect the spirit and diversity of the Australian outback.

The prize is once again proudly sponsored by Mrs Raylee J Hart and the Broken Hill City Council.

Also running concurrently is an exhibition by Fabian Muir entitled “Russia”.

As usual, I wish I could be there but work in Melbourne doesn’t allow me to visit the city at this time of year.  Good luck to the entrants and do try and get along to the exhibition I am sure it will be well worth it.

Cheers, Jane D
