Broken Hill art gallery list updated on ilovebrokenhill ... see footer

A section of the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery
The Broken Hill (and Silverton) art galleries list has been updated on my ilovebrokenhill website.

See the footer below.

Please scroll to bottom of the site for an up to date list of all the galleries in #BrokenHill and #Silverton.

There are over 25 galleries. There could even be more which you may stumble upon. New ones seem to spring up quite often.

As of this date, the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery is hosting several art exhibitions. The gallery has an active exhibition schedule. See their website for details.

The West Darling Arts at the Town Hall Facade space has a current exhibition and the Broken Hill Art Exchange (BHAE) has just moved to the Grand Guesthouse this week. The BHAE is just finishing setting up after their move, so not ready for visitors for a week or so. All three exhibition spaces are in #BrokenHill's main street - Argent Street. See my gallery list for the exact addresses.

Enjoy.

Broken Hill's art scene still active and vibrant - exhibitions aplenty

Back L-R me with local mosaic artist Julie Horsburgh,
front L-R Angela with local GAARA artist Maureen Clark,
with an artwork by BHRAG's Ian Howarth which is
being raffled. I hope I win.
Art Scene
BrokenHill Regional Art Gallery (BHRAG) hosted another series of openings on Friday night 28 November, and I was lucky enough to be there this time.

It was my first trip to Broken Hill this year and it was great to be back.

Four exhibitions were officially opened on the night with Broken Hill City Councillor Christine Adams the official guest to open the exhibitions, supported by BHRAG's Manager Cathy Farry.

Exhibition One
"Objects and Energies" featuring Australian-based Joyce Hinterding, US-based Linda Matalon and the highly influential American artist Agnes Martin.

Their extraordinary works display similarities but also exhibit quite divergent approaches. What they do share is an engagement in the repetition of certain forms, the process of marking time and delineating space and ideas on the infinite through recurring visual codes.

This is a National Art School exhibition touring through the support of Museums and Galleries of NSW. This project was supported through an Artist or Curator in Residence grant. The Artist or Curator in Residence Grant Program is supported by the Copyright Agency Limited's Cultural Fund, and is managed by Museums and Galleries of NSW.

Exhibition Two
Also opening was the “Our Land Speaking” exhibition of sculptures and drawings from Aboriginal artists from Menindee and Broken Hill. The exhibition was funded by a grant from the Thankakali Aboriginal Corporation.

Exhibition Three
The annual HSC Exhibition also opened. This exhibition showcases the fabulous art and photographic work of the Broken Hill and the regions's year 12 students.

Exhibition Four
Finally, the finalists in the “Our Place” sister cities photography exhibition also featured in the line-up. Broken Hill's sister city is Bankstown. The competition's winners were also announced.

Broken Hill's famous Line of Lode at sunset, taken as I rushed to the next gallery opening that night
Another opening!
As is often the case in Broken Hill, there was another art exhibition opening on the same night across town in South Broken Hill at the Broken Hill Art Exchange (BHAE).

Marilyn Lannstrom at the BHAE
by Darrin Manuel - Barrier Daily Truth (BDT)
This is the first exhibition for Marilyn Lannstrom, and is part of the Festival of Respect.

I know Marilyn's sister, talented local artist Karrie Lannstrom, whom I met in Broken Hill a couple of years ago.

Marilyn's exhibition is titled -

'A Tourist Destination'

and the subjects are of attractions in and around Broken Hill.

Obviously artistic talent runs in the Lannstrom family, if Marilyn's first exhibition is anything to go by. Although I missed the official opening, as most people had gone home (well I was late), I still managed to have a look at the artworks, and am seriously considering making a purchase myself! That's the danger of going to art exhibitions and openings.

There are 24 paintings (acrylic on canvas) for sale ranging in price from $100 - $350.

I caught up with a few people after the show, including BHAE manager Susan Thomas. Unfortunately Marilyn had left for the evening, but I hope to meet her in the coming week back at the gallery. Marilyn was pleased to have sold a couple of pieces on the night. I expect that number will increase. Her exhibition continues for two weeks.

Some of Marilyn Lannstrom's works at the Broken Hill Art Exchange

145-157 Duff Street Park Artist Centre, South Broken Hill

Open daily during exhibition 10am – 4pm

28 November until Sunday 14 December 2014

All exhibitions are worth checking.

Broken Hill and International Women's Day 2014

Art Scene
The art scene in Broken Hill strongly supports women.

Broken Hill has an all female art group - Gaara Arts Inc, which is currently exhibiting at the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery with their exhibition "Stronger Women, Stronger Nations". The exhibition, designed in part to coincide with International Women's Day 2014, will finish at the end of the day tomorrow, Sunday 9 March. See my post of 19 January, link here, published a few days prior to the opening of the exhibition on 24 January. Further details of the exhibition are -

Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery -

Gallery hours -
Monday - Friday 10am - 5pm
Saturday/Sunday and most public holidays 11am - 4pm

The manager of the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery is a woman - Cathy Farry. She's been in the role for over a year now and is doing a great job.

The Broken Hill Art Exchange which promotes local artists is also run by a woman - Susan Thomas. She's been in this role for a number of years.

Broken Hill Proprietary Smelters,
Intaglio etching by Deirdre Edwards

The co-founder of Gaara Arts - Deirdre Edwards, a prolific and talented local artist, who also has her own studio gallery, Art Mecca, is currently exhibiting, see link to my post of 28 February, here. Details of that exhibition are -

Where:     Albert Kersten Mining and Minerals Museum aka GeoCentre

Address:   Corner Crystal and Bromide Streets, Broken Hill

Time:      10am - 4.45pm Monday - Friday
1pm - 4.45 pm weekends

There are many talented female artists in Broken Hill, I've written about some of them over the past couple of years.

Gaara member Karrie Lannstrom recently exhibited at the Broken Hill Art Exchange, around Christmas 2013. I've come to know Karrie, as well as such artists as Jenny Cattonar and her 'Spirit of the Outback Studio Gallery', Betty Pearson, Robyn Taylor and Maureen Clark from Gaara, Tanya Marie Reeves (Art Confessions), Wendy Martin (with her husband Ian Lewis, and their Bush 'n' Beyond Studio Gallery), Julie Hart and her Julie Hart Gallery, and Andrea Blundell and her Homestead Gallery.

May women prosper and receive equal rights worldwide.

Karrie Lannstrom art exhibition opens Sunday Broken Hill Art Exchange

'Summer City Meltdown' by Karrie Lannstrom
Pastel on archival paper,  50cm x 70cm
Art Scene
'Hanging out in Da Hill'
Well know local Broken Hill artist Karrie Lannstrom has been busy preparing for her second solo exhibition which will open at the Broken Hill Art Exchange this coming Sunday 1 December 2013. Cathy Farry, the manager of the BrokenHill Regional Art Gallery will open the exhibition at 10am.

I first met Karrie in 2012 at a Broken Hill Carer's art exhibition where she was one of the exhibitors, see link here to read that story. Karrie is a real dynamo, very effervescent, quite a character in fact and a very talented and passionate artist. Last month she was honoured to receive the 2013 NSW Carer's Award for her contribution to caring for her local community.

'Back in the Hood - Argent Lane' by Karrie Lannstrom
In Karrie's own words, this "exhibition contains 17 works on paper, 13 of which are new and unframed except for mat board and foam back with plastic all done by framers. All works including previously framed ones are $500 and under”. Karrie will also have printed cards for sale.

'Sunshine Sunflower Days'
by Karrie Lannstrom

The works are mainly pastels, and all are produced on archival quality paper and materials. This is Karrie's second solo exhibition, her first was in 2010. Earlier in her career, Karrie gained a Certificate III and IV in Fine Arts from the local Broken Hill TAFE.

Some of the things Karrie says she loves about the Broken Hill region are the arid harsh lands, the corrugated iron houses often held together with bell wire and cobwebs, the extreme weather that can change the place drastically and the ruins of post industrial mining, the wild beautiful flowers and the wilder characters who survive and thrive on the edge of civilisation here in Broken Hill. Karrie is a member of a couple of the local art groups namely the Broken Hill Art Exchange and the all women's art group Gaara Arts Inc. Karrie also teaches art voluntarily at the local Broken Hill hospital.

The gallery at the Broken Hill Art Exchange (BHAE) is open 10am – 4pm daily.

Telephone - BHAE (08) 8088 3171

Contact Karrie - 0428 873 524

The exhibition runs from Sunday 1 December to Friday 20 December 2013.

I wish Karrie every success with her exhibition. I can't wait to see it and am planning a trip sometime soon so I won't miss out. I'm sure it's worth a look and you never know, you might come home with a new artwork. Some pieces have already sold pre-exhibition which is great news for Karrie and some sold on opening day.

Congratulations Karrie, cheers, Jane D

Menindee, Wilcannia, Cobar, Balranald, Tibooburra, White Cliffs, Ivanhoe,
Dareton, Bourke and Broken Hill.
