Art Scene/Community Event In the lead up to International Women's Day 2016, Gaara Arts Inc is opening their annual art exhibition titled "Looking Forward, Looking Back - A Woman's View" tonight at the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery. Gaara Arts Inc is Broken Hill's all women art group. Also opening tonight is an exhibition by Gayle Rodgers titled "Inspired". Community Event Today Broken Hill will officially celebrate the first anniversary of the city's National Heritage Listed City status in celebrations at the Town Square in Argent Street (opposite the Post Office). Time - 9am - 12 noon Official proceedings 9.30am-10am (Central Standard Time). Okay, the topic isn't new to my blog, but it's a good one nonetheless. And before I go on about one of my favourite subjects, namely Broken Hill, I wish readers and everyone a very Happy New Year. which as you can see, relates to the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) in Broken Hill. Today I want to highlight this important service yet again, not just because it provides a great tourist attraction experience for Broken Hill visitors, but because it relies on donations for much of its work and I want to support the fantastic work that they do. Why? Because your and my life may one day quite literally depend upon the RFDS.
The RFDS plays a vital role in the
care of sick and injured people in remote areas such as #BrokenHill
and the Far West Corner of New South Wales.
Broken Hill is in the South Eastern
Section of the RFDS. The RFDS operates in remote areas around Australia and covers over 7.3 million square kilometres.
The Bruce Langford Visitor Centre is at
the RFDS located at the Broken Hill Airport in South Broken Hill and
is open daily. The Centre won the Silver Award for the Tourism Services Category at the Inland NSW Tourism Awards in July 2015.
Visitors are welcome to browse through the Centre and
watch a film about RFDS operations at Broken Hill.
Guided tours are available which
describe the full extent of the RFDS's aeromedical services. Visitors
can view the communications room and, via a viewing platform, they
can see the medically outfitted aircraft and the hangar.
Visitors also have the opportunity to
see a working RFDS in action, every day of the week.
Royal Flying Doctor Service merchandise is available
for purchase at the souvenir shop (or from the RFDS online shop). All
proceeds from sales and admissions go directly towards the vital work
of the RFDS.
Hours - 9 am-5 pm M-F, 10am-3pm S-S and
public holidays.
Closed - Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New
Years Day, Australia Day and Good Friday.

I highly recommend you put the RFDS Base and Visitor Centre on your itinerary when you visit Broken Hill. It's a great experience.

Community Event New South Wales Department of Primary Industries - Lands (Crown Lands) has engaged Allen Jack+Cottier to explore options for Broken Hill's iconic Line of Lode.

There is an online survey available to complete www.lineoflode.com which will remain available until approximately 6 December 2015. There are 22 questions within the 11 section Survey Monkey managed questionnaire. The aim is to seek community feedback on how best to develop and preserve the heritage of the famous Line of Lode, and to better understand its role as on of the icons of Broken Hill.

Given Broken Hill had the honour, and deservedly so, of becoming Australia's first National Heritage Listed City earlier this year (January 2015), why not take the opportunity to bring the family up to visit the city in the coming Christmas/summer school holidays.

Community Event Broken Hill City Council is running a series of sessions to gain insights from the community on what people would like to see improved, maintained and in some cases decreased, across a range of Council services and facilities. The first sessions were held last Friday 6 November 2015 at the Town Square. From tomorrow Monday 9 November through to Saturday 14 November 2015 there will be a series of sessions at different locations around the city. Monday's session is at Westside Plaza - 9-11am, 11am-1pm, 1-3pm Tuesday's session is at Broken Hill Hospital 10am-2pm Wednesday's session is at the Town Square 7.30-10am and 11.45am - 2pm and Coles 9am - 3pm. Thursday's session is at Patton Street Newsagency 8-11am and Westside Plaza 9am-3pm Friday's session is at Westside Plaza 9am - 3pm Saturday's session is at Community Markets 8am-1pm and Oxide Street Newsagency 7.30-11am. The New South Wales State Government will provide $300,000 ($100,000 per year) as triennial funding for the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery so as to support the long term goals of greater community participation. The focus is to engage and build more audiences. The Member for Barwon, Kevin Humphries made the announcement recently. Mining Industry A bit of mining news! Drilling is to commence next week at the 'High Grade Copper-Nickel-Platinum Project' in Broken Hill - ASX Announcement 26 August 2015 (number 418/260815) Here is the announcement, sourced from the Silver City Minerals website - main points -
A
drill program of up to 1,500 m of diamond drilling is due to start by
the end of next week at Impact Minerals Limited (ASX:IPT) high grade
copper-nickel-platinum (PGM) joint venture project near Broken Hill
in New South Wales.
The
drill program will test seven targets (T1 to T7) at the Red Hill
Prospect which covers about one square kilometre, where Impact has
discovered a 25 to 30 metre thick near-surface layer of
copper-nickel-PGM mineralisation. The mineralisation mostly occurs in
two zones of high grade drill intercepts called the Upper and Lower
Zones (Figures 1 and 2-see website) which returned:
Upper
Zone: 9.5 m at 4.7 g/t 3PGM, 1.5% copper and 0.8% nickel including
5.1 m
at 11 g/t 7PGM, 1.9% copper and 0.9% nickel (RHD001) and
5.2 m
at 7.9 g/t 7PGM, 1.1% copper and 1.6% nickel (RHD006)
Lower
Zone: 9.9 m at 6.7 g/t 3PGM, 1.4% copper and 0.3% nickel including
4.2 m
at 11.8 g/t 7PGM, 2.6% copper and 0.5% nickel (RHD001) and
13.8 m
at 6.6 g/t 7PGM, 1.1% copper and 0.3% nickel (RHD006).
Note
3PGM = Platinum-palladium-gold and 7PGM = 3PGM + osmium, iridium,
rhodium, ruthenium where assayed (full details in Table 1-see website
for table).
These
results are some of the highest grades of PGM ever reported in
Australia.
The
two zones of mineralisation are interpreted to dip at a shallow angle
to the south and may be increasing in width and grade with depth
(Figure 1-see website). In addition the mineralisation is in part coincident with
an Induced Polarisation (IP) chargeability anomaly identified in a
ground geophysical survey (Figures 1 and 2-see website). This is Target T1 and
follow up drilling is planned to test the mineralisation at depth and
along trend (Figure 2)-see website.
The
other five drill targets consist of one ground (T2) and one down hole
(T3) electromagnetic anomaly, a rock chip geochemical anomaly (T4),
two induced polarisation (IP) anomalies (T5 and T7) and an airborne
magnetic anomaly (T6) (see announcement dated 1st April 2015).
Further
drill targets may also be identified from the results of a recently
completed ground gravity survey over the area. Interpretation of this
data is in progress.
The
drill rig is scheduled to mobilise to site early next week.
